The Delwin Fields Story
Well it started in about 1999 before the Internet had really taken off. I had a magazine called GBF.
One day I received a letter from a man named Cookie who wanted a subscription. He said he was a woman trapped in a man’s body.
We’ve heard that one before, but…
He felt he was a transexual…
A man who feels he is a woman that is a lesbian….
Once he has his operation he would consider himself a transexual lesbian.
When I first read his letter I was a little irritated. A man trying to penetrate our world?
Hmm since I’m a filmmaker I became intrigued and wanted to know about this Blackman who felt that he was a woman trapped in a man’s body that wanted a sex change so he could be a lesbian.
What?
You don’t hear about this type of stuff in the black community now and this was 22 years ago.
Before I go further, I will call Cookie a “he” because he was born with male genitals. Even after all these years, I struggled to called him a “she”, even on camera.
“I can't say just because you got your genitals cut off and grew breasts with hormones, that you are a ‘she’,” I would tell him. I’ve never been comfortable with that.
Even to this day it's like I don't want to be disrespectful, but at the same time, you know, your were born with male body parts.
Thus a man, but Cookie says no to this!
So anyway, he contacted me because he wanted to become a subscriber. Cool! So we talked about himself a little bit.
Then he started talking about a sex change and I knew I had to film it!
The first interview was on my tiny analog tape recorder...
